Blue crabs have been the staple and delicacy on the East Coast of the USA for many decades. In many areas, they are even more popular than lobster, shrimp, and other types of seafood.
They are typically eaten hot and whole with the help of a mallet and butter knife, dipped in melted butter.
Crab Feasts are very popular in the United States, where they are brought to the table by the dozen and eaten with corn on the cob. The table is covered with newspaper or a paper table cloth, amilies and friends typically share all together on a big table.
The demand is so high in the US that overfishing has caused huge shortages and the prices to skyrocket. Typical prices as of 2024 are between $95-120 USD for one dozen crabs.
In an ironic twist, just when overfishing and huge demand has caused costs to completely sky-rocket in the US, and many crab resturaunts to not be able to offer them regularly due to not being able to catch enough, the exact same Maryland blue crabs have made their way all the way across the Atlantic Ocean, to the waterways of southern Spain, including Málaga.
A jumbo crab is considered over 15.2 cm, and they are very rare in the US now due to being caught before they're able to get get to that size (it takes 3-4 years to grow that big). Here in Málaga, we are consistently getting crabs that are 16 and 17 cm wide, and they come for free in your order for no extra charge (they are much more expensive in the States).
